What to do in Punta Cana when it rains?

The best activities when the weather is bad
You wake up in Punta Cana, in the Dominican Republic, and dream of everything you are going to do that very day. You open the curtains of your room and realize it's raining.

The only option that crosses your mind is to stay at the bar of your all-inclusive resort drowning your sorrows, since the weather is not good, and even more so when the catamaran tour you had scheduled has been canceled.

But we want to show you that, even if the sun is not shining in the Caribbean, you can still do many activities. In this article, we are going to tell you what you can do when the weather is bad in Punta Cana.

7 experiences to do in Punta Cana when there is a storm

Punta Cana is one of the most famous places in the world for its beaches and good weather. But there are times of the year when clouds and rains make an appearance. This doesn't mean you can't do anything on the island and we want to prove it to you with some excursions you can do in Punta Cana, even if the worst storm in the world is coming your way.

Buggies

The first activity we propose is one of the most fun activities on the island when the weather is bad. This excursion can be done at any time of the year, but, the truth is that, skidding with a buggy through the mud that is formed with the rain is much more fun.

The activity consists of arriving at the meeting point after you have been picked up at the hotel and start driving the vehicle. The first destination is the sandy beach of Macau and, nearby, you will visit the coffee and cacao fields to taste these special beans.

From there the route continues to the Manantiales Indígenas, where you will explore one of the most impressive cenotes in Punta Cana. The buggy tour ends there, and this is also where the return trip to the hotel starts.

Take a safari on the island

The universal downpour continues to fall and we have to take out our umbrellas in Punta Cana, but it is a good time to do another activity. Doing a safari around the island does not cost anything because the transport goes from one place to another without you having to do anything, so you just have to enjoy.

The tour lasts 8 hours in which you will enjoy lunch at a cocoa plantation, the company of a local family, meet a local school of the Dominican Republic, visit a sugar plantation, a tobacco plantation, take a horseback ride and finish with maximum relaxation on the beach of Macao.

Visiting the Padre Nuestro Cave in La Altagracia

Although our beach day has been truncated and we miss being able to throw ourselves on the towel to get tanned, swimming or diving in the waters of a natural swimming pool inside a cave is not bad at all.

This is the plan in the cave Padre Nuestro, a trip towards the interior of the earth in the locality of Bayahíbe in which we will be able to do snorkeling, to enjoy the waters or simply to admire the beauty of the place without need that the sun has to make act of presence. Remember that you will be inside a cave.

Going to a tobacco factory

Let's continue with our route of rainy days and bad temperatures in Punta Cana to know one of the economic engines of the island. Dominican cigars are known all over the world, and on this excursion you will learn about the whole process of planting, harvesting and manufacturing cigars.

To smoke a cigar in the Dominican Republic is to travel back in time, when ships arrived from Europe without even knowing that this habit existed, since tobacco comes from the Caribbean and became known after Christopher Columbus' discovery.

Going shopping for gifts and souvenirs

Shopping tourism is another of the most popular activities when all the excursions have been cancelled. You can find a shopping center in every corner of Punta Cana, but the most recommended areas for shopping are Cortecito, Los Corales, Bávaro, Macao, Uvero Alto and Cabeza de Toro.

Here you will also have the opportunity to buy gifts or souvenirs for your family and friends. This way they can have a piece of Punta Cana in their homes.

Visit the hotel's casino

Once you have done all the tours we have suggested, it is time to stay at the hotel and enjoy its different environments. The hotel's casino is always a good option to have a good time, as long as you play responsibly.

Relaxing in the spa

The warm summer we were promised in Punta Cana has not appeared, but the hot waters of the spa can relax us. Almost all resorts in Punta Cana have a spa, so if the weather is not good, enjoy a relaxing time in the quietest area of your hotel.

What time of the year is rainfall most favorable in the Caribbean?

The Caribbean has a lot of jungles and forests that stay green all year round. And if there is green, there is rain. A good downpour can fall in the months of April, May, June, July, August, September and November. These months are called the wet season, so if you travel to Punta Cana on these dates, you're likely to get a small downpour.

What type of climate is there in the Dominican Republic?

The climate in the Dominican Republic usually stands out for its high temperatures, since the annual average is 77 °F, and also for its high humidity, which usually exceeds 78% during all months of the year.

It is a tropical climate thanks to which we can visit wonderful jungles right on the beach, so if there is one thing we can thank the Caribbean weather for, it is for creating such a beautiful place.

Why shouldn't bad weather affect your vacation?

One of the best tips we can give you is that bad weather should never affect your vacation plans on our island, as the weather is usually very changeable and at any time you can go from being in the rain to having to put cream on because there is a radiant sun. Or it can be cloudy at night and suddenly you can see all the stars in the sky.

Many of the activities we have shown you are an example that you can do things even if the weather is not good. Another advantage of visiting the Dominican Republic during the rainy season is that there will not be so many people, so you can enjoy many places without so much hustle and bustle.

Do I have to avoid hurricane season on my trip?

One thing we do recommend avoiding is the hurricane season in the Dominican Republic, which runs from June through November. These weather phenomena not only bring rain, but strong winds can completely ruin the experience.

Just because you are traveling during this time does not mean there will be a hurricane, but the unpredictable weather in the Dominican Republic is more common during these months of the year.

The months of the dry season are: December, January, February and March. This time of the year is usually high season in the Dominican Republic, since the thermometer reaches more degrees and the rains are less frequent, with a very pleasant climate.
