Main tourist destinations on the island

The Dominican Republic is full of fascinating destinations, ranging from the beaches to the jungles, and from the mountains to its capital.

Let's take a tour of all the places worth visiting in the country, as well as some of the gateways, such as our airports.

Playas

Bávaro

Declared one of the best beaches in the world by UNESCO, Bávaro is one of the most outstanding attractions in Punta Cana.

Located north of the municipal district, there are a large number of resorts and hotels perfect for our vacation. In an unparalleled setting, snorkeling, getting on a catamaran or strolling along the beach are activities you will never forget.

Úvero Alto

From Bávaro we move north to find another area with resorts and hotels, but in a much more relaxed atmosphere.

This beach of white and golden sand sometimes has perfect waves for bodyboarding and surfing, and on calm days the water becomes totally transparent, acquiring different shades of blue that contrast with the green that we have just behind us, the jungle.

Cap Cana

Now we come to the area with the most luxurious beach in the Caribbean, and here it is not worth spending the whole day cooped up in the resort. Cap Cana has this name due to the French word "Cap", which means cape in Spanish, as it is located right on the eastern tip.

Its hotels are among the most expensive in the Dominican Republic, as are its stores and restaurants. If you are lucky you can find some sales of the best brands. In its nightclubs you will find an adult audience, if you are traveling with friends to the Dominican Republic.

Macao

If you are staying at a resort or any of the hotels in Punta Cana, we assure you that leaving them to visit Macao beach is an excellent decision.

In this case you will find a beach very visited by locals for surfing. Located north of Bávaro, another option is to tour it with buggies and enjoy its crystal-clear water and white sand.

Cabeza de Toro

The eastern coast of the Dominican Republic has a unique beach in Cabeza de Toro. Located in front of the Bávaro lagoon, it is famous for its great density of vegetation, as we can find it full of palm trees very close to the water.

The coast is also protected by a beautiful reef, where we can see many species of fish if we have snorkeling goggles at hand. Away from resorts and hotels, it is the perfect place to enjoy all the tranquility of the Caribbean.

Airports

Punta Cana (PUJ)

Punta Cana's commercial airport is undoubtedly the most important in the country. It handles 60% of international flights, since it is the gateway to paradise.

It is located just 15 minutes by car or cab from Punta Cana's main destinations, making it the perfect option for arriving in the Dominican Republic.

La Romana (LRM)

An alternative to Punta Cana airport, especially if traveling to the southern part of the country or to destinations such as Saona Island or Altos de Chavón.

Passengers arriving at this destination will also arrive at the closest point to the incredible Romana and Casa de Campo, some of the most important tourist destinations in the country.

Santo Domingo (SDQ): Las Américas Airport

To travel to the Dominican Republic is to travel to a unique colonial past, and the best way to get to know it is in Santo Domingo.

The airport of the Americas is one of the largest terminals in the country, and is another major gateway to the Dominican Republic. In addition, by bus, cab or private transport we can reach the center of Santo Domingo in just 30 minutes.

Samaná (AZS): Juan Bosch

The Presidente Juan Bosch International Airport is the perfect point to reach the northern part of the country, more specifically Samaná. It is located 40 minutes from Santa Bárbara de Samaná since 2006, when it was inaugurated.

This airport receives a large number of passengers who want to visit one of the least exploited regions of the country where humpback whales gather every year during the mating season, specifically in the bay of Samaná.

Santo Domingo Capital

The cultural and historical corner par excellence is the capital of the Dominican Republic, Santo Domingo. There you can learn about the vestiges of the arrival of Columbus and his later adventurers.

You can also learn about the tradition of a country that has been influenced by its indigenous past, besides being one of the most atmospheric places in the country.

Puerto Plata

We now move to the north of the Dominican Republic to visit Puerto Plata. Away from the crowds, this town has several beaches and attractions such as the Ocean World Adventure Park and the Fortress of San Felipe, perfect destinations to visit with children.

La Romana

In the southeast, La Romana is another favorite destination in the country. Here we have a wide variety of activities, either because we are close to the beautiful Catalina Island, because we can visit the Mediterranean village of Altos del Chavón or simply because of its beautiful beaches such as El Caletón.

Juan Dolio

Between La Romana and Santo Domingo lies the town of Juan Dolio, whose main tourist attraction is its beach of the same name.

It has the reputation of being one of the most authentic destinations in the Dominican Republic, since it is located many kilometers away from the large crowds that come to places like Punta Cana or La Romana.

Boca Chica

Boca Chica is located 30 kilometers east of Santo Domingo. Despite the distance, it is known as the beach par excellence of the capital, and there you can find a very Dominican atmosphere that translates into lower prices than in other parts of the country.

Santiago de los Caballeros

Santiago de los Caballeros, an inland city located to the north, is another of the country's most culturally rich destinations. Its rich history ranges from its foundation during the second voyage of Christopher Columbus to its important strategic role in the War of Independence of 1844.

Also in its buildings we can find a neoclassicist style brought by the French, who dominated the island from 1795 after an agreement with Spain, as we can see with the monument to the heroes of the restoration.

Nearby is La Vega, another city with an incredible historical past.

Bayahibe

At the southeastern tip of the Dominican Republic we find Bayahibe, a famous destination for divers, who find in the waters of Bayahibe not only an extensive fauna, but also other attractions such as the Captain Kidd Shipwreck.

It is also the starting point for most of the excursions to Saona Island, known for its natural pool and beaches.

Samaná

Samaná is located in the northeast of the country, overlooking the bay that bears the same name, and where thousands of people come every year to observe large groups of humpback whales that come during the mating season.

There are many more attractions here, such as Las Terrenas, in the north of the province, a unique destination for its hotels and resorts at the foot of beaches such as Escondida or Playa Bonita.

Miches

This municipality in the province of El Seibo is located south of the bay of Samaná, and has among its main tourist destinations the tours to Montaña Redonda or to places in the center of the country where we can visit tobacco or sugar cane plantations, economic engines apart from tourism.

Higüey

This inland city shares with Punta Cana the fact that it belongs to the same province, La Altagracia. It is another very important cultural destination, with buildings such as the cathedral of Nuestra Señora de la Altagracia, its museum or the parish of San Dionisio.

Playa Boca de Yuma

One of the hidden gems of the Dominican Republic is this small town very close to Punta Cana. It gathers a lot of local tourism that goes there to spend the day with friends or family, finding a good and authentic gastronomy at a very good price.

Its main attraction is the Berna cave, very little crowded and with a unique landscape. Hoyo Azulito is a small cenote that is also worth visiting to have an exclusive photo in the whole country.
