Río Partido waterfall, a place of fantasy

Enjoy spectacular surroundings

We are often left with the image of the Dominican Republic that we are used to. Although the beaches of Punta Cana and the Caribbean are impressive, in the interior of the country there are also unique places. In this case we want to talk about the waterfalls of the Río Partido, among which is the Golondrinas, one of the most famous, entering the interior of the Dominican jungle in a unique excursion in the whole country.

What are the Río Partido waterfalls?

Río partido is one of the tributaries of the Jamao River, and not only has a waterfall, but in the excursion you will be able to enjoy several of them in addition to different puddles to be able to bathe.

The most famous is the Golondrinas waterfall. It is impressive for its height, being the most impressive waterfall of the whole tour, reaching 7 meters high. Its crystalline water acquires a turquoise tone that in contrast with the green of the Dominican jungle make a game of colors really spectacular. Another of the most photographed places in the area is the Honguito, a mushroom-shaped rock on which the water falls.

On the excursion you will visit other pools of crystalline waters where you can bathe without problems. The high point in Río Partido is a pool from which hangs a rope that will transport you directly into the deepest part of the water, a unique experience in the entire Dominican Republic.

Visit the Salcedoa Scientific Reserve

Another reason to do this excursion is to visit the Salcedoa Scientific Reserve, which is the source of the Partido River.

Besides being the place of origin of the watercourse, in this reserve there is a very humid subtropical forest, so there are species of fauna and flora that you can only see in this small part of the country.

This is due to the fact that Salcedoa is located between 450 and 800 meters above sea level, which causes the arrival of the trade winds that deposit the water that later gives rise to the Partido River.

The vegetation diversity of this area is spectacular, but the queen of the plants is the Salcedoa mirabaliarum, an endemic plant for which the scientific reserve was created.

Recommendations to go to the waterfalls

Although the important thing is to go with enthusiasm to this place, there are a number of tips you should follow to have the most complete day possible.

The excursion goes through dry and wet sections, so you should wear shoes with a suitable sole that grips the terrain and allows you to walk on wet stones. Some booties or sneakers are not superfluous to go with special care on the slippery rocks.

Don't forget to bring a swimsuit and comfortable clothes and a towel to change into once you get out of the water.

Sunscreen is also very important because, although the vegetation is usually quite shady, on sunny days the sun can affect your skin. A hat or cap is also a must.

It is not advisable to do this tour if you do not know how to swim, since many times you will have to cross deep puddles. Even so, there is the option of buying or renting a life jacket that will help you to be able to do this beautiful excursion.

How to get to this place?

First of all, we must locate the Río Partido on the map. This place is located in the province of Hermanas Mirabal, formerly known as Salcedo. The city of Salcedo is the largest population center nearby.

However, the closest town is Villa Trina, although the Golondrinas waterfall is closer to the community of Tres Cruces.

There are two different excursions on the Partido River. One of them is the one that goes to the Golondrinas waterfall, which lasts about 4 hours.

The other is the one that leaves from the Confluencia, and that takes you through the Partido river through different puddles and that also crosses the famous Honguito. This is undoubtedly the most popular route.
